Big Sister Nichole and Little Sister Dominique have been matched in the site-based program since 2013.
Why did you decide to become a Big Sister?
I love giving back to the community and I think in some cases, time is the best thing you can give. This organization has such a great reputation that I couldn’t resist the opportunity to make an impact!
Were you nervous about becoming a Big Sister? How were your hesitations alleviated?
Slightly. I was worried about building a relationship with a teen who may have been a little hesitant to accept a random adult as a friend. The very first day my little and I were introduced, I knew it wasn’t going to be an issue!
What is your favorite thing to do with your Little Sister?
Girl talk! We meet after school on campus and like to play games… but mostly we like to laugh and talk about life as a lady.
How would you describe your relationship with your Little?
Constantly growing. Our relationship continues to get stronger. I like to think we are friends who can count on each other for advice and support.
Describe the first time you met your Little. How have things changed since then?
My little was a bit shy at first, but that quickly changed. I think the biggest difference is the wide range of topics we now discuss. Trust is huge!
What do you think your Little has learned from you?
Stay strong, but it’s okay to have feelings. We all have struggles, but it’s how you handle them that matters.
How has your Little Sister impacted your life?
She brings so much joy to my life. The innocence and determination she shows continues to remind me that this world is full of good kids who will grow to be productive, caring adults. She gives me hope.
How do you balance the commitment of being a Big with your other commitments?
It’s not too bad at all! I know we meet at the same time each week so I schedule around it.
What advice would you give to someone thinking about becoming a Big?
DO IT! It’ll not only impact your match, but you as well. I look forward to meeting with my little each week and like to think she looks forward to our meetings too. Who doesn’t want a forever friendship?
Please share a favorite memory or “lesson learned” from your match.
My favorite memories are probably our selfie sessions because her personality shines, or playing “Heads Up” because we never stop laughing. As far as lessons… be yourself! Your little will appreciate you for who you are. It’ll help build trust and promote real conversation.
